I feel the need...

Since the weather is awesome out, apologies for those who prefer colder weather, I am done running indoors on the treadmill. It was only here that I was timing my runs (as I can only stand 20 min. on the treadmill regardless of how fast or slow I go). When training for my last race, a 5k, I alternated short timed runs (1mi) and longer, typically untimed, runs (3-4mi). I like this schedule because it includes less total time spent running (than all long runs), is easier on my joints, and allows me my to monitor my progress via my short sprint times.

I plan on a similar schedule this time, but since the final race is 13.1mi, the longer untimed runs will have to basically triple in length. It seems natural to increase the sprint runs as well. Today I started timing my short distances. I will, depending only on my mood, time 5k's and 1.5 mile sprints, randomly interspersed between long slow runs. I chose these distances b/c I will likely run a random 5k this summer, trying to break my PB of 8min miles for a 5k, and because the Air Force PT test includes a 1.5 mile run, and I like to compare times with my students. A perfect score for my age group (30-39) on the PT run is a <=9:34.

Update on NY resolution: weight change is within standard deviation of my measurements, despite exercise. switching to light beer.

I know, I really shouldn't be complaining about the weather. I'm glad it's no longer in the 30s, but I just wanted a few more weeks of 40-50 degree weather, like the weekend y'all visited.

I have no scientific proof only anecdotal evidence, but I believe that there's a sharp slowing of the metabolism for women at around age 18, and for men in their early 30s.
