Barefoot
Over Labor day I read "Born to Run", by Christopher McDougall. It inspired me to finally get some barefoot running shoes. Here is what I got -
They have a 0mm heel drop, and basically give no ankle or arch support, they just protect the skin on your feet. I have gone running a couple times in them. The first two were rather painful. For anyone transitioning, regardless of your abilities, I warn you not to run more than a mile your first time out. I foolishly did, and spent a week barely able to walk (sore muscles in the back of my ankles). Since I have built up some strength, and ran a 5k with b wearing my barefoots. We ran together, so I wasn't pushing it, but I could still tell I was much lighter on my feet. I think I will be able to get a much faster 5k time barefoot style than I ever did in traditional running shoes. I have two more 5k's scheduled this fall. One is a "Glow run", in which I will run with a group. The second is a Turkey trot, where I plan to see what these shoes can do.

Maybe I should read "Born to Run."
Definitely. It got me excited to run again.
Update: 25 Degrees on Turkey day and my family bailed. Jury is still out on barefoot runners speedwise. From a training perspective they really limit your distance. I had small problems with shin splints and foot cramps and haven't ran more than 5k in them.
