Amidst my summer activities there is plenty of time for introspection, and planning for the future. For example, I am looking forward to the AMS sectional meeting at PSU, and the APS fluids meeting at UMN, or the Beijing Waves meeting next summer. I will start my next NSF grant application, and in tandem write my teaching and research statements. Blythe and I decided I should apply for jobs in the Fall. Although my post-doc can be for three years (two remaining), I need to apply for jobs to avoid misssing opportunities (most places don't have positions every year). So plenty of work to think about.
This summer's hard work will be bookended by two vacation periods. The camping trip should be very festive. I plan on not being afraid of possums. Here is why possums might get a bad rap:
Opposums are nocturnal, and our main observations of them are fleeting or as road kill. Unlike some other famous nocturnal animals (skunks, beavers, racoons, hedgehogs) possums are not featured in our generations cartoons. In terms of animals starting with O, they play second fiddle to the Octopus (awesome, less common, not scary). On a personal note, before writing this entry I pictured opposums as a blend of actual opposums

and the much more rare and crazy star-nosed mole

Since the reality of both is much tamer than the fantastic combination, I propose that no one should fear possums (or star nosed moles).

That first photo of an opossum is really scary. I can't figure out why this post is titled "Alice Cooper."

Laughed all the way through the blog picturing you saying/typing/thinking/laughing at yourself while writing them.
